SUBJECTS TAUGHT:
11+ English, KS3 and GCSE English (both Language and Literature) and A level English Literature.

I also support the Extended Project Qualification for Edexcel and AQA, and oversee preparation for CommonApp and Oxbridge (English and Modern Languages).

TUTORING & TEACHING EXPERIENCE:
Since qualifying as a teacher in 2002, I have been very lucky to teach at some genuinely fantastic schools. At The Lady Eleanor Holles School in Hampton, I doubled as English teacher and rowing coach, before moving on to be responsible for GCSE English and briefly acting Head of Department at Radley College. When the bright lights of London beckoned, my roles became more focused on mentoring newly-qualified teachers, and overseeing A level English, Oxbridge and US university preparation. I’ve successfully supported six students in recent years to places at Oxford, Stanford and Princeton as well as UChicago. I’ve also tutored both locally and internationally since 2002, supporting individuals from 11+ all the way up to (and sometimes after) the transition to university.

After the pandemic, I moved into tutoring full-time and my current students range from those preparing for specific entrance exams and for GCSE’s and A levels, to those trying to get their heads round the new challenges of university reading lists or first year exams. My tutoring is sharply focused on the individual: not just their target grades or destinations, but on the way they work as learners and the particular challenges they need to overcome to get where they want to go. I really enjoy getting to know the families I work with, and try to make tutoring sessions as lively and enjoyable as they are focused and rigorous. I’m also a professional author and freelance editor, and particularly enjoy the opportunities to bring my skills as a creative to my teaching.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Kellogg College, Oxford (2012-2014) – Master of Studies in Creative Writing

  • University of York (2001-2002) – PGCE in English and Drama

  • Brasenose College Oxford (1997-2000) – BA in English Language and Literature

EXTRA-ACADEMIC INTERESTS:
When I’m not teaching, I’m generally to be found writing my second book or else trying to encourage my four Labradors to behave nicely in public. Both are works in progress.
